Commencing early in the morning following breakfast, you’ll embark on a drive to Marangu Gate, situated in the scenic Marangu village. Here, the customary registration process for Mount Kilimanjaro climbing will take place. Ensure to pack a backpack with essentials such as a camera, extra clothing, rain jacket, and other recommended items for the day’s trek. Porters will handle additional gear including food, water, and cooking supplies, often arriving ahead to prepare for dinner. After completing formalities, your guide will lead you along a clearly marked trail, offering assistance and insights as needed. Departing from the park office, the ascent begins through a picturesque ridge route within the rainforest. The forest, adorned with mist and draped in moss, follows the stream’s edge through lush undergrowth. After approximately three hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, situated amidst the tranquil montane forest. The hut, equipped with wooden A-framed structures, offers a comfortable haven for climbers, with solar-powered lighting and essential amenities. Water sourced from springs above flows into the camp, with flush toilets conveniently located behind the main hut.
Habitat: Montane forest
Duration: 3 hours

Set off early after breakfast for the ascent towards Horombo Hut, carrying a picnic lunch along. From Mandara Hut, the trail leads through a brief forest stretch before skirting the base of Maundi Crater, transitioning into the moorland. Consider taking a short detour to Maundi Crater’s rim for breathtaking views of Kibo Crater and its glaciers on clear days. Traverse through the moorlands, encountering Kilimanjaro’s unique flora, including towering lobelia and groundsel plants. By late afternoon, reach Horombo Hut, where a warm dinner and overnight stay await. Enjoy a restful night, with temperatures hovering around freezing point.
Habitat: Moorland
Hiking time: 8 hours
Distance: About 11 km
The ascent becomes more challenging as oxygen levels decrease at higher altitudes. Starting the day, you can opt for either of the two trails leading to the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. It’s advisable to follow the lower route, which is less strenuous and includes the last watering point before Kibo Hut. Ensure to stock up on water for the journey. The hike to Kibo Hut takes 5 to 7 hours through barren terrain characterized by extreme conditions. Prepare your equipment upon arrival, including ski sticks and thermal clothing for the summit attempt. Rest early as a very early start awaits.
Habitat: Alpine desert
Hiking time: 6 hours
Distance: About 8 km
This day proves to be the most challenging as you begin before midnight, ascending a rocky path towards Hans Meyer Cave at 5150 meters. After a brief rest, continue towards Gillman’s Point at 5685 meters, navigating steep and stony terrain. Snow may accompany the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5895 meters. Upon reaching the summit, savor the achievement amidst cold and fatigue, capturing memorable moments before beginning the descent. The journey back to Horombo Hut involves several hours of hiking through varying terrain.

Following an early breakfast, descend past Mandara Hut towards Marangu Gate, a journey lasting around seven hours. At the gate, complete necessary paperwork to receive a summit certificate, signifying your accomplishment on Mount Kilimanjaro. Enjoy a hot lunch and celebrate with your mountain crew. Subsequently, transfer to a hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved shower, dinner, and overnight stay or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your return flight home in the evening.
